PATIENT EVIDENCE & CONSULTATION GUIDE

Category: Conditions & evidence · Editorial Review: Updated 20 October 2026 · 3 minute read

Fat grafting has a structural purpose

Facial fat grafting transfers a patient’s own fat to change volume or contour. Fat contains multiple cell types, but its presence does not make every fat transfer a proven stem cell treatment. Ask whether the proposed procedure is conventional grafting or includes additional cell isolation, processing or enrichment.

Clarify what is being added

If a clinic markets a stem-cell-enriched graft, request a plain-language description of the preparation. Ask how it differs from standard fat grafting, which outcome is expected to improve and what comparative evidence supports that difference. More processing is not automatically better, and a cell count alone does not establish a clinical benefit.

Discuss surgery-specific risks

The consultation should address asymmetry, contour irregularity, infection, fat survival, donor-site effects and serious injection-related risks. Ask who performs the procedure, what anesthesia is used and how complications are managed. A regenerative label must not obscure the fact that fat harvesting and facial injection are medical procedures.

Plan around a gradual result

Early swelling can make the face look different from its later appearance. Ask when the surgeon evaluates the settled result and whether further treatment might be considered. Bring photographs that communicate your goals, and request realistic explanations of the limits of volume restoration for skin laxity or other concerns.
