Regulatory status: ask about the exact intervention

A facility certificate, product authorization, and research approval answer different questions.

“Use this guide to frame clear, indication-specific questions for your specialist consultation.”

Start with identifiers

Ask for the exact product name, manufacturer, proposed indication, administration route, and the document supporting its use. A general statement that a clinic is approved may refer to the facility rather than every treatment it offers. The specific intervention must be evaluated in the relevant jurisdiction.

Separate the pathways

Commercial product authorization and a supervised research or treatment pathway should not be presented as identical. Ask whether you are a research participant, a patient receiving a licensed product for a specified use, or receiving care under another documented route. The answer should align with the consent and payment documents.

Verify rather than infer

Use the responsible Korean authority and request help from the treating clinician to interpret the documentation. U.S. FDA information is useful safety context but does not determine Korean legal status. Do not infer nationwide legality from a foreign regulator’s website or a clinic’s English-language marketing page.

Putting the discussion into practice

Keep copies of the actual documents rather than only a screenshot of an approval logo. Check that the named institution, product, indication, and dates correspond to the proposal. If translation is needed, ask for an explanation from someone qualified to interpret the clinical and regulatory meaning. Do not treat a certificate for equipment or a laboratory process as approval of a treatment claim.

Questions to take to the consultation

Ask: What exact legal or regulatory route applies to this intervention for my diagnosis? Which authority issued the relevant document? Does the document cover the institution, the product, or the treatment plan? Is the use within the stated indication? The clinical team should help connect the paperwork to your actual care. Where the position is unclear, seek clarification from the appropriate authority rather than assuming that a familiar logo settles the question. Regulatory information can change. Record the date on which the status was checked and confirm it again if treatment is delayed or the proposal changes. A historical approval or news article may not resolve the current position of the specific intervention.
