PATIENT EVIDENCE & CONSULTATION GUIDE

Timing changes the question

Research after stroke may target early tissue injury, later repair or rehabilitation support. A study conducted soon after a stroke does not answer the same question as treatment years later. Ask whether the evidence concerns ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke and how closely participants resembled you in impairment and time since the event.

Recovery has several contributors

Function may improve through rehabilitation, adaptation, supportive care and the brain’s own recovery processes. An uncontrolled case report cannot reliably show which improvement came from cells. Ask about the comparison group, standardized functional measures and the durability of any difference. Improvements on a scan or laboratory marker may not mean greater independence.

Prevent another stroke

A research consultation should not interrupt established prevention care. Your stroke clinician should review blood pressure management, relevant medicines and other risk factors while you explore options. New facial weakness, arm weakness, speech difficulty or other sudden neurological symptoms require emergency assessment rather than waiting for an overseas appointment.

Prepare a useful record set

Include the original hospital summary, brain imaging, rehabilitation assessments and current medications. Ask the Korean program what level of mobility, communication or caregiver support is required. A practical plan should cover transport, accessibility, follow-up testing and how the team will distinguish treatment effects from changes in rehabilitation intensity.
