Expect reassessment

A remote enquiry can help organize a visit, but examination may change the recommendation. Bring the records previously submitted and identify any new symptoms or medication changes. Tell the clinician if the written quote or proposed procedure differs from what you understood before travelling.

Confirm the treating team

Ask who will assess you, perform any collection or administration, and supervise follow-up. Clarify which parts occur at another facility. A familiar coordinator is helpful, but you also need a clear medical point of responsibility.

Review the final plan

Discuss the diagnosis, intervention, intended benefit, uncertainty, and alternatives again in person. Ask whether any additional tests are needed before deciding. If a different treatment is suggested, request a revised explanation and quotation. The effort of travelling does not make the original plan automatically appropriate.

Leave time to decide

Keep some flexibility between assessment and intervention where possible. Review the written materials in your preferred language and contact your home specialist if important questions remain. A successful arrival consultation may result in proceeding, postponing, changing treatment, or deciding against it.

A useful arrival agenda

Bring three priorities to the in-person appointment: confirm the diagnosis, confirm the intervention, and confirm the follow-up plan. Ask the doctor to identify any difference from the remote recommendation. Write changes down before discussing payment. If new tests are proposed, ask what question each test addresses and whether its result could change the decision. This helps the visit progress from assessment to a reasoned plan.

Questions if the recommendation changes

Ask why the original proposal is no longer preferred and whether the new option has different risks, costs, or travel implications. Request time to review the revised consent. If the team recommends no treatment, ask for a written assessment and suggested next steps for your home clinician. A medically useful trip can produce clarity even when it does not lead to the procedure originally advertised.
