Verify the exact plan

Check the procedure name, intended body site, preparation, and responsible clinician against your consent and quotation. Ask about any changes since the consultation. A package name is not enough to confirm that everyone is discussing the same intervention.

Review individual instructions

Follow the clinical team’s written directions for eating, drinking, medicines, and arrival time. These vary with the procedure and any sedation or anesthesia. If you missed an instruction or took a medicine unexpectedly, tell the team rather than trying to correct it yourself.

Report new symptoms

Inform the clinic about fever, infection symptoms, a new illness, pregnancy possibility, or other relevant changes. The team may need to reassess the timing. Do not hide a symptom because you are worried about losing a deposit or changing a flight.

Confirm what happens afterward

Know where you will recover, who will accompany you if required, and how discharge is decided. Obtain the contact route for urgent questions and confirm the first follow-up appointment. A readiness check should include the hours after treatment, not only the procedure itself.

A readiness conversation example

If you took a regular medicine despite being unsure about the instructions, tell the team exactly what you took and when. Do not omit it from the checklist or attempt to compensate by skipping later doses. The clinician can decide whether the plan needs adjustment. The same principle applies to an unexpected meal, new symptom, or recent treatment elsewhere: accurate information is more useful than appearing perfectly prepared.

Questions immediately before proceeding

Ask who will confirm your identity, procedure, and treatment site, and who will answer any last clinical questions. Clarify where personal belongings and documents will be kept and how your companion receives an update. If sedation is planned, settle important decisions beforehand. A final check should resolve uncertainties, not create pressure to agree simply because the room and staff are ready.
