Why studies set criteria
A trial may specify diagnosis, disease stage, age range, prior treatment, organ function, or other characteristics. These criteria help create a study population in which the research question can be answered and risks managed. They are not simply administrative obstacles. A person who does not qualify may face different risks or may be unlikely to provide interpretable evidence for that study.
Eligibility is not a recommendation
Meeting a trial’s criteria does not mean participation is the best option for you. The decision still depends on available alternatives, the study’s uncertainty, practical burdens, and personal priorities. Conversely, being excluded does not mean that care is unavailable. Ask your specialist what established options or other studies may be appropriate.
Why results may not generalize
If a study enrolled only relatively healthy adults with a narrow disease stage, its results may not apply to older people with several medical conditions or advanced disease. A clinic should explain these differences when citing research. The more your situation differs from the study population, the more cautious the interpretation should be.
Prepare accurate information
Provide a complete diagnosis history, medication list, prior treatment details, and relevant test results. Do not omit information to improve the chance of enrollment. Eligibility review is part of safety. If someone suggests bypassing a criterion by purchasing treatment outside the study, ask what evidence supports that separate pathway and who accepts responsibility for the additional uncertainty.
