Get personalized thresholds
Ask your team which symptoms require an immediate call or emergency assessment after the specific intervention. The instructions may be different for a transplant recipient, a person taking immune-suppressing medicines, and someone after a local procedure. Keep the written thresholds and emergency contacts accessible.
Do not wait for a routine reply
Severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, new major weakness, or rapidly worsening illness warrants urgent medical assessment. Do not rely on a clinic messaging account that may be checked only during office hours. If you are unsure whether symptoms are serious, seek timely medical help rather than waiting for the next scheduled follow-up.
Bring the treatment record
Tell the evaluating clinician what procedure you received, when it occurred, and which medicines you are taking. Provide the preparation or product details if available. A concise record can help a new team assess a problem even if it is unrelated to the intervention.
Transplant recipients need particular care
Infection during cancer treatment can be serious. Follow the transplant team’s fever and infection instructions promptly, including guidance about calling before taking medicines that may mask symptoms. After immediate care is arranged, notify the original team so that follow-up and documentation remain coordinated.
An emergency information card
Prepare a short card showing the procedure date, treating institution, relevant medicines, allergies, and emergency contact. Include the name or description of the cell preparation if known. Carry it during the stay and return journey. This does not replace the full record, but it can help an unfamiliar clinical team quickly understand the context when you are unwell or unable to explain everything clearly.
Questions to resolve before discharge
Ask exactly which number to use at night and whether it connects to clinical staff. Clarify where you should go if urgent examination is needed and whether the original facility can provide it. Ask what to do if you cannot reach the team. The plan should work when the coordinator is off duty, your phone battery is low, or you are already at the airport.
