Describe your work accurately
Tell the clinician whether work involves lifting, standing, driving, exposure to infection, travel, or prolonged concentration. A return-to-work recommendation based only on a job title may miss important demands. Include the commute and any responsibilities that cannot easily be modified.
Plan a flexible transition
Ask whether reduced hours, remote work, breaks, or temporary duty changes would be helpful. Avoid promising a fixed return date before the clinical plan is settled. Transplant recovery and a brief outpatient procedure should not be treated as having the same timetable.
Request useful documentation
If needed, ask for a certificate describing functional restrictions and anticipated review rather than unnecessary private medical details. Discuss employer requirements before travel so the overseas team can provide an appropriate document. Keep employment and insurance paperwork separate from your clinical records.
Review rather than push through
If symptoms interfere with safe performance, contact the treating team and revisit the plan. Returning to work is one milestone, not proof that all recovery is complete. A graded arrangement can be adjusted as your clinician assesses progress and as the actual demands become clearer.
A practical work discussion
A person with a desk job may still have a strenuous commute, while someone with a physical role may be able to accept temporary lighter duties. Describe both the essential tasks and the available flexibility. Ask your clinician which restrictions are medical requirements and which are practical suggestions. This distinction helps you and your employer create an arrangement that supports recovery without sharing more medical detail than necessary.
Questions for the review appointment
Ask what would indicate readiness to increase hours or duties and whether another assessment is needed first. Clarify whether driving, operating equipment, or working alone creates particular concerns with your medicines or symptoms. If the proposed return date arrives and you are not coping, contact the team rather than assuming that the original estimate overrides your current condition. Keep any revised recommendation in writing.
